Vas County storms

Short Description

In 2016, nearly 50 storm damage incidents prompted emergency responses from the firefighters of Vas County. These incidents involved trees falling on roads, buildings, and cars, fallen power poles, traffic lights, and tree branches, as well as the removal of accumulated rainwater.

Detailed Description

In February, March, and April of 2016 (February 9th, February 13th-14th, March 4th, and April 24th), stormy weather caused several emergency callouts for the county’s firefighters. Most of the responses involved fallen trees, but there were also other incidents: In Szombathely, on Vajda János Street, strong winds tore off a metal sheet from the roof of an apartment building. Firefighters also responded to a food store in Sárvár, where the wind started to tear off the metal roof over the entrance. In Vasszilvágy, a 25-meter-high cedar tree was broken by the strong winds, and it fell onto a family house, damaging its roof. In Szombathely, at a family house on Vasvári Pál Street, the wind broke the two securing clamps of an antenna mounted on the roof, causing the antenna to hang over the sidewalk, posing a danger to pedestrians. On Szent Flórián Avenue, the strong wind damaged the insulation of a four-story apartment building, tearing off about 200 square meters of it. The fallen insulation pieces damaged a nearby parked car and posed a risk to traffic and pedestrian safety. A total of 250 people participated in addressing the damage.

No one had to leave their homes as a result of the storm damage, and no civil protection measures were necessary.

The material damage amounted to 8,800 EUR.

On July 31, 2016, in the evening, a storm with wind and rain caused small to moderate damage across the county. The firefighters of Kőszeg responded to remove a fallen pine tree from the road in Kiszsidány, and the Répcelak firefighters were called to deal with a large, partially broken tree branch in Csáfordjánosfa. In Bük, the wind broke a walnut tree taller than eight meters, which was cut up by the firefighters of Csepreg. In Lukácsháza, the storm uprooted a walnut tree, which fell onto a family house terrace and crushed a car beneath it. The Kőszeg firefighters used chainsaws to remove the walnut tree and freed the car. The storm also caused damage in Celldömölk, where lightning struck the chimney of a family house on Kinizsi Street. Although no fire occurred, the chimney was damaged and became hazardous, so the local firefighters dismantled the damaged structure. A total of 40 people participated in addressing the damage.

No one had to leave their homes as a result of the storm damage, and no civil protection measures were necessary.

The material damage amounted to 1,850 EUR.

On November 11, 2016, due to the increasing winds, four storm-related incidents required intervention in Vas County. From the morning hours, fallen trees caused traffic disruptions on the roads. Near Nárai, the professional firefighters of Szombathely, near Őriszentpéter, the volunteer firefighters of Őriszentpéter, near Gersekarát, the municipal firefighters of Vasvár, and near Nádasd, the professional firefighters of Körmend (a total of 19 people) had to clear the roads to ensure uninterrupted traffic. No material damage occurred.
