Vas County extreme winter
Short Description
Detailed Description
At the end of November, a warm front brought 13 mm of precipitation, followed by a significant drop in temperature. On the morning of the 27th, the temperature was measured at -2.6°C, and the next day, it dropped to -3.7°C. On the 28th and 29th, the temperature only reached around 5°C. On the latter day, a Mediterranean cyclone arrived, and by the next morning, 23 mm of precipitation had fallen, making it the wettest day of the month. The initial rain turned into snow by the morning of the 30th, and a 3 cm snow layer formed, but by evening, most of it had melted.
However, at the Hungarian-Slovenian border, on the M70 motorway at the Tornyiszentmiklós border crossing, the Slovenian authorities stopped trucks with a total weight of 7.5 tons or more. At the Hungarian-Croatian border, the Croatian authorities stopped trucks of the same weight at the Letenye border crossing, preventing them from continuing toward Hungary. At the Hungarian-Slovenian border at the Rédics border crossing, Slovenian authorities also stopped trucks with a total weight of 7.5 tons or more. The 86 road south of Körmend was closed to vehicles over 7.5 tons.
Hundreds of trucks were backed up due to the so-called forced waiting.
In the county, there were no incidents that required firefighter intervention due to the winter weather. All roads were passable, and public transportation operated without delays. In response to the meteorological situation, the operation of the Vas County Disaster Management Directorate’s Operational Staff was activated.
After the snowfall, the weather began to warm up, and the snow that had fallen melted. The border crossings reopened that same day for heavy vehicles as well.
