Vas County storms

Short Description

In 2020, the firefighters of Vas County were called out to nearly 250 storm-related incidents. These events involved trees falling on roads, buildings, and cars, fallen power poles, traffic lights, and tree branches, as well as the removal of accumulated rainwater.

Detailed Description

In February 2020 (February 5th-11th), the county’s firefighting units were called out nearly 80 times to deal with storm damage. Most of these calls involved removing fallen trees, branches, and loose roof elements, with a total of 415 firefighters involved. In Szombathely, the strong wind caused the insulation to deteriorate on the mechanical space roof of a ten-story apartment building over an area of ten square meters, and the wind also damaged the slate covering on the tower of the Lutheran Church. In Celldömölk, the wind caused damage to the roofs of a market building, two residential buildings, and a primary school, while in Sárvár, a hotel building’s metal roof was affected by the storm’s force. On the main road 84, near Borgáta, strong winds flipped a truck’s trailer onto its side while it was in motion. In Celldömölk, the wind damaged the wooden cladding of a family house six meters above the ground, putting the residents at risk. In Szombathely, the professional firefighters removed loose roof tiles from a decommissioned hotel.

No one had to leave their home due to the storm damage, and no civil protection measures were needed.

The material damage amounted to 1,716 EUR.

Between May 12th and 14th, 2020, the county’s firefighting units (a total of 105 people) were called out nearly 20 times to deal with storm damage. Most of the incidents involved damaged roof panels, broken tree branches, and façade damage due to strong winds. In Sárvár, on Széchenyi István Street, a broken tree branch fell onto a parked car. In Répcelak, on Kőris Street, a tree fell onto the fence of a family house. In Daraboshegy, on Fő Street, a tree fell onto a neighboring house. In Körmend, the crown of a large tree broke off and fell onto a parked car, and a 15-meter-high ash tree toppled over in Körmend, endangering a playground on Molnár Lajos Street.

No one had to leave their home due to the storm damage, and no civil protection measures were needed.

The material damage amounted to 2,470 EUR.

On August 17th, 2020, a sudden downpour caused significant issues in Vas County. Professional, municipal, and volunteer firefighters (a total of 390 people) were called out to nearly 100 locations to address storm damage. Most of the calls involved fallen trees, broken tree branches, and rainwater that flooded basements and yards, requiring pumping. In Celldömölk, rainwater could not be drained from the fields and sewers, leading to significant water accumulation on the roads, causing several cars to become stuck. In Szombathely, the wind damaged the roof of a family house, while firefighters also pulled out a sunken bus. In Körmend, the wind damaged the plaster of a building, and electric wires were downed at several locations. In Vépe and Kenéz, the storm caused roof damage to houses, with tiles and slate pieces falling onto the roads, and in some places, beams were also damaged.

No one had to leave their home due to the storm damage, and no civil protection measures were needed.

The material damage amounted to 8,420 EUR.

In October 2020 (October 3rd-4th, October 14th), the county’s firefighting units responded to 5 incidents of storm damage. Most of the incidents involved fallen trees, broken tree branches, and the removal of accumulated rainwater. A total of 65 firefighters participated in addressing the damage.

No one had to leave their home due to the storm damage, and no civil protection measures were needed.

No material damage occurred.
