In 2021, multiple second-level heat warnings were issued, and on certain days, the National Meteorological Service upgraded the warnings to a third level, based on forecasts and the professional recommendations of the National Center for Public Health, as advised by the country’s chief medical officer.
On June 21, 2021, cutting waste caught fire near Vasvár, and the flames spread to a nearby acacia grove over an area of ten square meters. Professional firefighters from Körmend and Zalaegerszeg, as well as municipal firefighters from Vasvár, responded to the scene. The firefighters used three water jets and hand tools to prevent the fire from spreading and then extinguished the flames. On the same day, dry grass burned over an area the size of two football fields near Adorjánháza. The Celldömölk municipal firefighters used one water jet and hand tools to control and extinguish the fire.
On June 25, 2021, fire broke out over ten hectares of grass, brush, and waste at the border of Rábapaty. Firefighters from Sárvár, Szombathely, Kapuvár, Pápa, and Sopronkövesd, along with municipal firefighters from Répcelak, and volunteers from Jákfá, Ják, Hosszúpereszte, and Nick responded to the scene. Under the direction of the Zala County Disaster Management Operational Service, the units attacked the fire from multiple sides, using water jets and hand tools to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby sheepfolds. The hot weather and strong winds made the firefighting efforts more challenging.
On July 16, 2021, fire broke out on two hectares of stubble and bales near Jánosháza. Professional firefighters from Sárvár, and volunteer firefighters from Jánosháza and Kamon extinguished the flames using three water jets and hand tools, preventing the fire from spreading further.
On August 2, 2021, a stubble fire broke out on nearly three hectares in Újkér, on Ady Endre Street. The Csepreg municipal firefighters used three water jets and hand tools to prevent the fire from spreading and then extinguished the flames. On the same day, a stubble fire burned on three hectares near Bejcgyertyános. The professional firefighters from Sárvár used three water jets and hand tools to extinguish the flames. Additionally, four hectares of stubble burned near Sárvár. The professional firefighters from Sárvár used four water jets, including one with a leaf blower, to prevent the fire from spreading further and extinguished the flames.
On September 8, 2021, dry grass burned on two hectares in Zalalövő. Firefighters from Körmend and Zalaegerszeg, as well as municipal firefighters from Zalalövő, responded to the scene. The units used two water jets and hand tools to prevent the fire from spreading and extinguished the flames.
On September 13, 2021, dry vegetation burned over 1,000 square meters in Döröske, on Szentegyház Street. Professional firefighters from Körmend used one water jet and hand tools to stop the fire from spreading and then extinguished the flames. Dry grass and fruit trees burned over 500 square meters on Felső-Sótonyi Street in Sárvár. The professional firefighters from Sárvár used three water jets and hand tools to prevent the fire’s spread and extinguish the flames. Additionally, cutting waste caught fire in Ják, on Tátra Street. The professional firefighters from Szombathely and volunteer firefighters from Ják used hand tools to extinguish the smoldering remains. Cutting waste also burned in Szakony, on Felsőgyár Street, where the Csepreg municipal firefighters responded. The unit extinguished the flames using hand tools. Lastly, dry brush burned over 50 square meters on Sárdi-Ér Street in Szombathely. Professional firefighters from Szombathely used two water jets and hand tools to prevent the fire from spreading and extinguished the flames.
In the highlighted fire incidents, nearly two hundred firefighters participated in the damage control efforts. In addition to professional firefighters, municipal and volunteer fire units also participated in stopping the spread of the fire and quickly extinguishing the flames. The firefighting tasks were carried out under the direction of the Vas County Disaster Management Operational Service. There were no injuries or fatalities in any of the incidents. The total damage caused by the fires amounted to 25,000 Euros.
