Vas County storms

Short Description

In 2023, the firefighters of Vas County were called out to nearly 250 storm-related incidents. Every month of the year, there were one or two stormy days when the units were needed due to severe weather. Some buildings became uninhabitable, one person was injured, and three people had to temporarily leave their homes.

Detailed Description

Between January 10th and 11th, 2023, the county’s firefighting units were called out 18 times to remove fallen trees. Fallen trees blocked traffic on roads near Bobá, Jánosháza, Gérce, and the neighboring Iván in a neighboring county. Between Győrvár and Vasvár, four passenger cars were involved in accidents due to a fallen tree. In Karakó, a tree from a neighboring property fell onto an outbuilding. Firefighters from Sárvár, Celldömölk, Répcelak, and Vasvár municipal units, along with Jánosháza and Iván volunteer firefighters, intervened with a total of 125 people.

No one had to leave their home due to the storm damage, and no civil protection measures were needed.

The material damage amounted to 123 EUR.

On February 4th, 2023, early in the morning, the meteorological service issued an orange alert for the entire area of Vas County due to strong winds and gusts. Firefighters in Vas County were called out to nearly 98 locations. Most of the incidents involved fallen trees, broken branches, downed power lines, and fallen power poles. The strong winds also caused damage to buildings. Firefighters were constantly working from one site to another to address the damage. In Kőszeg, a large tree fell onto a family house, while in Uraiújfalu, a power line was brought down by a large tree. In Szombathely, on Kötő Street, a house’s fire wall collapsed. In Körmend, on Tilalmasi Street, the wind damaged a chimney, while in Vasvár, on Vasvári Pál Street, plaster fell onto a parked car. In Nicken, on Jázmin Street, a tree was uprooted, and in Celldömölk, on Kőtörő Street, the wind tore off a family house’s metal roof. In Répcelak, firefighters assisted at the local Catholic church where the storm damaged the roof structure. In Sárvár, on Hunyadi János Street, they removed a tree that had fallen onto parked cars. A total of 515 firefighters participated in addressing the damage.

No one had to leave their home due to the storm damage, and no civil protection measures were needed.

The material damage amounted to 24,864 EUR.

In March 2023 (March 14th-15th, March 27th), firefighters were called out to 27 storm-related incidents, mostly due to fallen trees and building damage. In Tömörd, a ten-meter-high tree fell onto a family house, and in Ikervár, the storm began to damage the unused chimney of a kindergarten, along with the surrounding metal roofing. In Celldömölk, the roof structure of a three-story building posed a risk to traffic. In Szombathely, the wind damaged the roof of a property on Petőfi Sándor Street, with falling tiles endangering traffic and damaging cars. In Szombathely, on Szöllősi Sétány, a tree fell, pulling down the power lines and a power pole, which also fell onto the fences of two family houses. In Répcelak, on Vörösmarty Street, the wind began to damage the metal cladding of a twelve-meter-high cylindrical water tower. In Csepreg, on Rákóczi Street, a pine tree fell onto power lines, and several power poles collapsed onto the road. The power outage during the works affected 15 households. The wind also damaged the roof structure of a daycare center in Vasvár. In Pornóapáti, a tree fell onto the road.

Firefighters from professional, municipal, and volunteer units responded to the incidents, with a total of 245 people involved.

No one had to leave their home due to the storm damage, and no civil protection measures were needed.

The material damage amounted to 17,654 EUR.

On July 10th, 2023, a storm with lightning and strong winds caused damage, leading to 12 calls for help from firefighters in Vas County. Most incidents involved fallen trees and broken branches, but in Gencsapáti, lightning struck a twenty-five-meter-high protected giant sequoia, causing it to catch fire. In Répceszemer, a tree fell onto the windshield of a car passing underneath. The Sárvár professional and Csáfordjánosfa volunteer firefighters rescued the driver and passenger, handing them over to the ambulance service. In Külsővat, the wind damaged the roof tiles of a family house, endangering pedestrians. In Bobá, an eight-meter-high tree fell onto the power lines.

A total of 60 firefighters were involved in these incidents.

No one had to leave their home due to the storm damage, and no civil protection measures were needed.

The material damage amounted to 4,938 EUR.

On July 12th, 2023, a storm with strong winds and rain caused 12 incidents in Vas County. Most of these involved removing fallen trees and broken branches from roads, buildings, and vehicles. In Peresznye, on Kert Street, two large branches from a twenty-five-meter-high ash tree fell onto the roof structure of a terraced house. In Chernelházadomony, four small acacia trees blocked traffic on the road. In Sárvár, on Ostffyasszonyfai Street, a broken large tree branch damaged a passing car. In Csepreg, on Petőfi Street, three trees fell onto telephone lines. In Kőszeg, firefighters were called to remove fallen trees from two locations. Firefighters from Sárvár, Szombathely, Csepreg, Kőszeg, Vasvár, Répcelak, and Peresznye municipal and volunteer units used chainsaws to cut and remove trees from the roads, buildings, cars, and telephone lines.

No one had to leave their home due to the storm damage, and no civil protection measures were needed.

A total of 50 firefighters were involved in the events. No material damage occurred.

In September 2023 (September 13th, September 24th), firefighters were called out to 12 locations. In Kőszeg, lightning struck a church on Kőszegfalvi Street, causing the church tower to catch fire. Firefighters from Szombathely and Kőszeg used aerial rescue vehicles to reach the dome, preventing the spread of flames and extinguishing the fire. On Rómer Flóris Street, a basement of eighty square meters filled with water. The municipal firefighters used pumps to remove the rainwater from the basement. On Borostyánkő Street and Ciklámen Square, trees fell onto the road. The units used chainsaws to cut the trees and removed them from the road. Additionally, the units were called for fallen trees and downed power lines.

No one had to leave their home due to the storm damage, and no civil protection measures were needed.

A total of 80 firefighters were involved. No material damage occurred.
