Pinka river flood

Short Description

On June 9, 2024, due to an extreme amount of sudden rainfall, a flood wave exceeding the highest previously recorded water level was forecast to occur on the Rába River and its tributaries (primarily the Pinka River). The flood reached its highest point on the Pinka River, surpassing the highest water level recorded in the past 200 years, while fortunately, the Rába River did not break any records.

Detailed Description

Based on the forecasts, from 22:00 on June 9 until 17:00 on June 10, the West-Danube Water Management Directorate built a sandbag flood defense (rabbit dam) 2,400 meters long on the state flood embankment with insufficient height in Körmend city as a preventive measure. On June 9, 290 people (water management, road maintenance, emergency services, volunteer fire departments, civil guards, professional disaster management personnel) participated in building the flood defenses, and on June 10, 367 people (water management, road maintenance, emergency services, volunteer fire departments, civil guards, professional disaster management personnel, police, military, tax office, and prison staff) took part. A total of 48,000 sandbags (24,000 on June 9 and 24,000 on June 10) were used. An on-site operational staff was set up to coordinate the construction of the flood defense. The Rába River reached its peak of 477 cm at 21:00 on June 10 in Körmend.

From 05:50 on June 9, seven family houses in Szombathely, Hattyú and Halastó streets were protected with 500 sandbags.

From 07:50 on June 9, the Kindergarten on Szabadnép Street in Ják was protected with 400 sandbags as a precaution.

From 10:58 on June 9, 20 family houses on Petőfi Sándor Street in Szentpéterfa were protected with 1,000 sandbags.

At 16:20 on June 9, 400 sandbags were used to protect family houses on Petőfi Street in Magyarlak.

At 17:56 on June 9, a family house on Fő Street in Pornóapáti was protected with 1,500 sandbags.

Due to the flooding of the Rába River, 11,500 sandbags were used on June 9 along the flood protection sections of Szentgotthárd and Körmend. The flood defense efforts involved the Körmend District Rábavölgye Rescue Group (13 members), the Szentgotthárd District Hármashatár Rescue Group (3 members), and the Őrség-Goričko-Raab Rescue Group (12 members).

From 06:00 to 20:00 on June 10, due to the flooding of the Pinka River, the following local rescue groups participated in flood defense activities in their respective towns:

  • Felsőcsatár Rescue Group (4 members)
  • Vaskeresztes Rescue Group (10 members)
  • Horvátlövő Rescue Group (20 members)
  • Pornóapáti Rescue Group (20 members)
  • Szentpéterfa Rescue Group (35 members)

A total of 16,500 sandbags were used across the five towns. The Pinka River reached a record-breaking 508 cm at Felsőcsatár on June 10, surpassing its previous highest water level.

From 10:40 to 11:59, two family houses in Horvátzsidány (Fő Street and Erdő Street) were protected with 250 sandbags. The water was removed from the properties. No evacuation or relocation was necessary. The intervention involved 4 municipal firefighters, 24 volunteer firefighters, and 5 members of the Kőszeg District Írottkő Rescue Group.

From 14:06 to 14:45, 4 members of the Kőszeg Police Department removed water from the deep garage at Rómer Flóris Street 8 in Kőszeg. The water intrusion caused no material damage.

From 21:00 on June 9 until 17:00 on June 10, an on-site operational staff of 3 people operated in Körmend.

There was no need for evacuation or rescue measures related to the flood defense.

Due to the flood wave’s retreat in the county, thirteen lower-tier roads were closed. Two towns were isolated, but by 18:08 on June 10, they became accessible via public roads.
