Short Description

In 2024, firefighters in Vas County intervened in 80 storm-related incidents caused by strong winds. These events involved trees falling onto roads, buildings, and cars, fallen power poles, traffic lights being torn down, and branches. In one case, tornado damage was also reported.

Detailed Description

On January 7-8, 2024, wind gusts of 70-80 km/h reached Vas County, and due to previous rainfall, the softened, loose soil made trees a hazard to road traffic. In many locations, fallen trees obstructed traffic, and in some cases, traffic lights were ripped down by the storm. Firefighters in Vas County responded to nearly 50 damage sites. Trees fell on roads in Bozsok, the Óház street in Kőszeg, Királyvölgy street, Ipartelep street in Sárvár, Vasszilvágy, Szőce, and Csipkereki. In Kenyeri, a large tree was held aloft by an internet cable. In Szombathely, on Kilátó street, a tree damaged a parked car. A car also crashed into a tree that had fallen onto the road near Csákánydoroszló. On Zanati street in Szombathely, the wind damaged a traffic light. In Nemesbőd, on Alkotmány square, the wind uprooted a 14-meter-high pine tree. In Madách Imre street in Szombathely, the wind damaged the roof sheet of a residential building. On Kenyérhegyi street in Kőszeg, a large tree fell on power lines. On Forrás street in Kőszeg, a large thuja was uprooted, and in Baross street in Celldömölk, a 10-meter-high walnut tree fell on a building. On Rákóczi Ferenc street in Bozsok, a poplar tree damaged the roof structure of an old mill building.

On June 8, 2024, a heavy thunderstorm struck Narda, where trees were uprooted and around 16 houses had their roofs damaged by hail. Firefighters responded in large numbers, with professionals arriving from Szombathely, volunteers from Felsőcsáta and Pornóapáti, and operations coordinated by the Vas County Disaster Management Operation Service and on-site officers. Firefighters used chainsaws to cut up the trees and began temporarily repairing damaged roofs on residential buildings, fixing tiles, and protecting against water ingress with tarpaulins. Roofing work was assisted by seven work machines and four carpenter teams with around 30 people. The electricity provider temporarily disconnected the affected sections of power lines, impacting 95 residential buildings during the outage.

As a result of the events, no one had to leave their homes, and there was no need for civil protection measures.

Firefighters from both professional and volunteer teams responded, with a total of 46 people involved.
